Instructions Following a Prophy (Cleaning)
Your child may experience some tenderness around the gums for a day or two. If this persists, you may have them rinse with warm salt water 2-3 times per day for as long as needed. For discomfort you may use over-the-counter pain medication as directed for the age and weight of your child, such as Acetaminophen/Tylenol or Ibuprofen/Advil/Motrin.
Instructions Following Fluoride Treatment
Patients should not rinse or eat for at least 30 minutes to maximize the fluoride’s direct contact and absorption with the teeth.
Instructions Following Sealant Placement
Your child may notice that the tooth feels different because of the new sealant. The teeth and bite will feel normal again in a couple of days. Your child should avoid sticky, crunchy, or hard foods for 24 hours following the placement of the sealant. Excessively sticky foods, such as gummy snacks or candies, should always be avoided to prevent loss of the sealant. Sealant integrity is evaluated at every check up visit. Sealants do not last forever and will require repair or replacement in the future. Clenching or grinding also reduces the longevity of sealants.
